SOME CALABRIAN TYPICAL DISHES
Among the many aspects that push people to come to Calabria for their holidays, such as the enchanting landscapes, cultural events and points of historical interest, we must not forget the gastronomic one.
Calabria is proposed as the land of taste and flavors, which go well beyond the famous Calabrian chili pepper, the undisputed but not unique protagonist of most of the typical Calabrian dishes.
Many of the typical dishes of the Calabrian tradition are linked to the history and culture of the region and often to religion. Among the Calabrian appetizers we cannot fail to mention the tomato bruschetta with Tropea onion, the one that gives the dish its taste, or the bruschetta with typical creams prepared with local products. A few examples? Mushroom cream, cherry tomato cream, pepper cream or fish based creams. If the spicy isn’t afraid of you, then we suggest you to taste the bruschetta with n’duja, a sort of salami prepared with very hot chili pepper. There is the non-spicy variant of n’duja, but it loses its flavor.
Another typical dish to be enjoyed as an appetizer is the caviar of the poor, or the sardella, or sardines prepared in oil and fairly salty. They exist both spicy or in non-spicy variant. An advice? Enjoy them with homemade bread and vegetables in oil, which break with the salty taste of the Sardinian. To be accompanied with a glass of local red wine.
The Calabrian first courses are prepared either with meat, with fish or with vegetables. The most famous are homemade pastas such as gnocchi, strozzapreti, strangugghi or Fileja prepared with typical products, from homemade sauce to meats or fish purchased.
Among the typical dishes, we recommend you to taste the Parmigiana, prepared with fried aubergines, ham, mozzarella and sauce. The eggplant parmigiana, the classic one, is proposed as a versatile dish, which can act as a single dish or as a side dish. We advise you not to overdo it, being quite heavy or opt for eggplant rolls, in a light version.
Among the main courses, in addition to the countless dishes prepared in every way with fresh fish or meat, we suggest you to taste some typical Calabrian dishes, such as the Morzeddhu Catanzarese, prepared with the tripe of veal boiled and cooked in tomato paste and hot pepper or the aubergines stuffed with capers, olives and anchovies. A real delicacy, to be enjoyed especially in summer.
Equally tasty are the purpetti, or meatballs prepared with pork, cheeses and chili peppers. There are also vegetable-based variants, such as aubergine or pepper patties or courgette pancakes. From here we offer you some typical side dishes of the Calabrian tradition, such as the Pipi chini, or stuffed peppers, smoked turnips, broccoli, pee and potatoes, or fried half-moon peppers and potatoes, zucchini fritters.
Calabrian sweets are also a real delicacy, all prepared with natural and locally produced ingredients, such as honey, fruit jams and more. From the collection of seasonal fruit, delicious jams are obtained which are used for the preparation of typical sweets, such as tarts or cakes of all kinds.
Another thing to eat in Calabria are the biscuits prepared with dried fruit, such as figs or raisins, walnuts, almonds and orange peel. Equally delicious is nougat, prepared in different variations throughout the region.
This is just a taste of Calabria’s immense gastronomic heritage and which we recommend you enjoy during your travels and holidays.
Truffle is, surely, the tastiest and favorite dessert, especially in summer and not sorry in winter. A chocolate ice cream dessert with a dark chocolate heart. The variants are white truffle with a coffee heart or black truffle with a chocolate heart. The alternative, however, is the stuffed hazelnut.
